Peter, we need to access and integrate data more easily.

I liked this article on Fundamental Truths when it comes to innovators. I do think Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos have figured out how to be crazy successful in business. I do wish they were more philanthropic with the monies they have accumulated from their success. I digress...

I like the idea of a fundamental truth as a foundation for your business that doesn't change through time. And when I think about my commitment to build an ocean data services business, I have now started to think about what would be the fundamental truths? I believe everyone working with ocean data have these three fundamental truths that will not change, now or in the future.

  1. We need to access and integrate data more easily.
  2. We need better ways to visualize, communicate, and understand the data.
  3. We would like to reduce the compute and storage costs of data.

These are what I came up with through my review of my initial thinking of fundamental truths. I know there will be a few more and these three will be edited as my idea grows and gets greater footing.

The Data Readiness Assessment

One of the core technologies provided by Oceans Set is the Data Readiness Assessment. The purpose of this assessment tool is threefold;

  • First, it is an end-to-end deep dive into your organizations data; where it is coming from, how its stored, how integrated its design, how good is it's quality, how well it is managed, how easily it can be accesses, and it's overall integrity and security. Essentially, we answer the question, "Do you have good data health?"
  • Second, what is your data's readiness to bring additional intelligence to your organization. Are you getting the insights you can from your data? Is the data easily accessible, and by the correct people? How well does your data align with external data sources? Is your organization able to learn from its historical and day-to-day data sets?
  • Third, are you missing out on revenue opportunities that are baked into your data sets. Do you have data that may have greater value to someone else without giving away your competitive advantage? Have you assessed your data for value beyond your own organization?
How do we execute your data readiness assessment? It's mostly a consulting engagement, where we have highly skilled staff who work closely with your business, your subject matter experts, and your information technology team. The details of the assessment are your organizations competitive advantage.
